Winter in Anne Arundel County can be beautiful—but it can also bring icy sidewalks, freezing temps, and hazardous walking conditions for both pets and people. At Tails on Trails, we walk dogs year-round, and winter is the season when safety matters most. Here are a few simple tips to help keep your pup safe and comfortable all winter long.
1) Watch for Ice & Black Ice
Maryland winter weather often melts and refreezes, creating slick spots—especially in shaded areas, on steps, and near curbs. Walk slowly and avoid steep or untreated areas when possible.
2) Protect Your Dog’s Paws from Salt
Salt and ice melt can irritate paw pads and the skin between toes. After walks, wipe your dog’s paws with a warm cloth and check for redness or cracking. Booties or paw balm can help for sensitive pups.
3) Bundle Up When Needed
Not all dogs need winter gear, but many do—especially small dogs, seniors, puppies, and short-haired breeds. If your dog shivers, lifts their paws, or tries to stop walking, it may be time for a coat (or a shorter walk).
4) Stay Visible in the Dark
It gets dark early in the winter months, and many neighborhood roads have limited lighting. Use reflective gear and consider a small LED collar light so your dog stays visible to drivers.
5) Safety First During Storms
If snow or ice conditions are severe, it’s okay to shorten walks and focus on safe potty breaks plus indoor enrichment. Your dog can still stay happy with quick outdoor time and fun indoor activities.
