Why This Process Matters
We believe that great dog care starts with strong communication and trust—both with you and your pup. Our intake process is designed to create a smooth, comfortable transition, where your dog feels safe and happy, and you feel confident knowing exactly who is caring for them. Welcoming a new dog into our walking family is always exciting—but it’s also something we take very seriously. At Tails on Trails, our goal is to make sure both you and your pup feel completely comfortable and confident with us from the very beginning. That’s why we have a thoughtful, step-by-step intake process that helps us understand your needs, build trust with your dog, and ensure every walk runs smoothly.
Step 1: Let’s Talk About Your Dog’s Needs
Our first step is always a conversation. This is typically done over the phone and we will discuss a few key points to understand what you’re looking for:
- How many walks per week do you need?
- What time(s) of day work best?
- How long should each walk be?
- Does your dog have any behavioral quirks, health concerns, or special preferences we should know about?
This information helps us tailor our service to your schedule and your dog’s unique personality and lifestyle.
Step 2: The Initial Meet-and-Greet with Our Leadership Team
Once we’ve had our initial chat, we’ll schedule a meet-and-greet at your home, which is conducted by either the owner or manager of Tails on Trails. This meeting lasts between 15-30 minutes. This isn’t just a formality—it’s an important step in getting to know your dog and ensuring we understand your expectations from the very beginning.
During this visit, we focus on building trust with your dog in their home environment. We move at their pace, using a calm and friendly approach to make sure they feel comfortable and safe with us.
Step 3: Learning the Routine
We’ll take your dog on a short introductory walk during this visit. This allows us to observe their leash manners, walking style, and any behavioral cues we should be aware of. It’s also a great first step in forming a positive connection with your pup. While we’re there, we’ll also ask you to show us the important things, including:
- Where the leash, harness, or collar is kept
- Where treats, food, and any medications are stored
- Where to find cleaning supplies in case of an accident
- Where to dispose of poop bags
These small details help us care for your dog just the way you would.
Step 4: Introducing Your Dog to Their Walkers
Your dog’s first walk with their primary and backup dog walkers will include the same team member you met during your initial meet-and-greet—either the owner or manager of Tails on Trails. We believe in thoughtful, gradual transitions, so your dog will never meet a new dog walker without a proper introduction from someone your dog already knows and trusts. These introductory visits serve two important purposes:
- They help your dog build familiarity and confidence with the people who will provide their primary care.
- They give us a chance to review and reinforce all the important details we covered during your meet-and-greet—everything from leash routines to treat preferences to accident protocols.
By taking the time to do these introductions the right way, we ensure that everyone—walkers, leadership, and most importantly, your dog—is fully aligned and comfortable before solo walks begin.
